There are many online tools that can be used to support student learning, and this has become one of my new favorites. I use the online quiz platform Kahoot to host collaborative exam review sessions. In the past, I created elaborate “Jeopardy”-style review games using PowerPoint, but I find Kahoot to be easier to use, more flexible, and more engaging for students.

After creating a quiz – either from scratch or by adapting user-created content – I present it in class. Because my free account limits participation to 40 users, I ask students to work collaboratively in pairs or small groups of three or four. What initially seemed like a limitation has turned out to be a strength, and I would continue using this approach even with a paid account. Working in small teams allows students to discuss their reasoning, build confidence, and strengthen relationships with their peers, while also making the activity more energetic and interactive.

One student from each group accesses the quiz by navigating to kahoot.it on a phone, tablet, or laptop and entering the game pin generated by Kahoot.

As I present each question, I read the text aloud, and teams submit their responses as quickly as possible. After each question, we immediately review the results, which allows me to identify common misunderstandings and address them in real time.

At the end of the quiz, Kahoot displays the top three teams based on accuracy and response time. I bring a small prize box to class so that winning teams can choose a sticker, rubber duck, or other small trinket to celebrate their success.

When designing these quizzes, I intentionally include several topics that students typically find challenging, making the activity a focused and effective exam review tool. On the exam itself, I include modified versions of these questions. Because these concepts were explicitly reviewed in class, students who participated in the review session have a clear advantage – an approach I view as both fair and aligned with encouraging active engagement and attendance.
