Had a great time at the field station today when Dan and I hosted a Flex Session in Bolinas. All faculty at staff at the College of Marin are required to do a certain number of hours of professional development training every year, and for many employees, the bulk of these hours can be earned during Flex Week, which happens the week before instruction begins in both the Fall and Spring semesters. So, this year, Dan and I offered a Flex Session to give folks a chance to see the field station while earning flex credit for their visit.

We’d prepared a relatively short program – a brief history of the field station, some of the things Dan and I have done since taking over the coordinatorship, some of our plans for the future, and an invitation for faculty to bring their students on field trips to the station. Dayna Quick gave an overview of some of the research she’s planning to do out here, and George Rothbart gave a great overview of his Diatom Project.

After the presentations, however, the real magic happened. Everyone had the opportunity to interact with the animals in our live specimen sea tables, which is always so much fun. Plus, Dan and I had so many amazing conversations and connections with faculty and staff from across campus.

I’m so grateful to everyone who made the trek out here for the flex session, and I am genuinely excited about working with folks in the future in such a wide variety of ways.

Here are the slides for our Flex presentation:
